New York State · Grades K–6

English language practice built on New York's standards

ENL Ready turns NYSED's Academic and Linguistic Demands into practice for grades K–6: the same grade-level goal at six proficiency levels, across listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Every activity is reviewed by an ENL educator before students see it.

How ENL Ready works

1. Start from the standard

Each activity begins with a New York Next Generation ELA standard and its Main Academic Demand, Grade Level Academic Demand, and Linguistic Demand from NYSED's ALDs.

2. Differentiate across 6 levels

The goal stays the same. Language complexity, expected responses, and scaffolds change from Level 1 Entering to Level 6 Reaching.

3. Four domains

Listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities, including read-aloud, recording, sentence building, and evidence highlighting.

4. Educator-reviewed

Every activity is checked by an ENL educator before it is published. Baseline, benchmark, and end-of-year assessments are coming later.

What's changing in New York

  • New York joined the WIDA Consortium in October 2025.
  • Starting in 2026-27, WIDA ACCESS replaces the NYSESLAT as the annual English language proficiency test for all ELLs in grades K-12.
  • The testing window is February 1 – April 9, 2027.
  • Grades 1-12 test online across four domains: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Kindergarten uses a paper-based storybook format.
  • Scores use six proficiency levels (1 Entering through 6 Reaching) instead of the NYSESLAT's five.
  • Test administrators must complete new self-paced certification courses, which opened in September 2026.
  • The WIDA Screener replaces the NYSITELL in fall 2027.
  • New York is not adopting the WIDA ELD Standards Framework 2020; it keeps its own Academic and Linguistic Demands (ALDs).
